Members from the Owerri Nigeria Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (group of congregations) labored side by side with members of the Okwu Autonomous Community to renovate Okwu Community Hospital in May.

The 34-day renovation project included painting, plumbing, re-roofing, cleaning windows, scrubbing walls and mopping floors. LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of the Church, provided funding for the project.
Seventeen skilled professionals from the building/construction industry volunteered their service. More than 2,740 hours were donated to the renovation project.
Father Camimario Egolu, parish priest of St. Bendas Catholic Church remarked, “I feel very excited to see what God has used our brothers in the LDS Church to do for our community. This is the gospel at work. This is touching lives.”
“It’s not just about preaching,” he continued. “I was dazed when I came here this morning. I believe this work will greatly benefit the common man in our community.”
Chief medical director of the hospital, Dr. Omoike Joseph, expressed his gratitude for service rendered.
“At last God has remembered this hospital,” he said. “I was here 37 years ago when this hospital was commissioned. Today, I am alive to witness this renovation and see the donation of equipment which will help the people of this community. It is a miracle!”
Dr. Joseph added, “May God continue to bless LDS Charities for the wonderful work they have done for us.”
During a handover presentation on June 10, the Okwu Community Head, Mr. Simon Okpara, remarked, “I feel highly delighted and excited with the work done by the volunteers from LDS Charities which has lifted the community hospital and given it a new face. . . I thank Almighty God for bringing you to do this for us.”
Acting as spokesman for the Church, President Kingsley Okwara of the Owerri Nigeria Stake presented the renovated hospital with a donation of medical equipment from LDS Charities.
The donated equipment includes a sphygmomanometer, suction machine, weighing scale, drip stands, baby cots, circumcision kits, a hematocrit centrifuge and malaria testing kits.
President Okwara thanked members of the community and Church members for their efforts. He charged the community to keep the hospital clean and maintain all the equipment donated.
