Professor sheds light on Breast Cancer Management

The Relief Society Women of Port Harcourt West Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held their Annual General Conference on the 15th of September, 2018 at the Stake Centre, 110 Iwofe Road, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt.

The gathering of women from all works of life was presided over by Stake President Victor Wagyu and the theme of the Conference was "Trials: Plan of Salvation".

The Guest speaker of the conference, Prof. Mrs. Grace Robinson Bassey, a professor in Nursing was the first female Professor in Ikwerre. She is currently the Head of the Department of Nursing, Port Harcourt Rivers State. She focused her presentation on Breast Cancer.

According to her, Breast cancer is one of the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in our society and women have a higher risk of breast cancer, though the ratio in women and men is about 190/20. She enumerated the different types of cancer in the body, the causes and things to do or avoid. She also gave a detailed explanation of the four stages of cancer and its treatments, giving a handout on self-examination of the breast. This will aid early detection and reporting because as age sets in, the risk of breast cancer increases, and hence the need to take care on time.

"Breast Cancer does not develop overnight, it takes years and so if noticed on time, do not panic to report for early diagnoses is better than Cure", Mrs. Grace Robinson Bassey concluded.

The Port Harcourt Stake Relief Society Choir graced the event as they sang the hymnal song “How gentle God's command” beautifully. This was closely followed by Mrs. Sophia Emmanwori’s presentation. She spoke on "Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ" as a spiritual gift of God to all his children to be nurtured as we daily learn and study the scriptures line upon line, keeping the commandments and covenants we made with God.

Sister Chinyere Wordu, the second speaker, focused on Repentance as a way provided for us to become free from our Sins. She explained that knowing something good to be done and not doing it is sinful. Recognising sin is the first step to repentance, followed by confessing and restituting by making right what has been done wrong.

The third speaker, Sis. Charity Ajie Ogochukwu- the Stake Relief Society President, spoke extensively on the theme of the conference - Trials-Plan of Salvation, relating it to the General Relief Society Creed, she urged sisters not to stay idle but to be up and doing to assist the family build and foster love, peace, and harmony in the home, and assist their husbands.

The Conference came to an end as the Stake President, Pres. Victor Wagwu gave his admonition, by explaining what the plan of salvation entails as one individually asks, where do I come from, why am I here on earth and where do I go after life on earth.

Some of the over 350 women in attendance expressed their thanks and love for the conference as it opened their eyes to why one should not keep quiet in sicknesses.
