Hundreds of Youth embrace "Peace in Christ" at Ibadan

Command Day Secondary School in Ibadan - the largest city in west Africa, was a temporary home for 867 youth from the Lagos area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who participated in the five-day long, “For the Strength of Youth (FSY) camp.

FSY program happens once every four years and accommodates youth between age 13 to 17 years of age. Lessons are taught and activities coordinated by young single adult counselors, many of which are returned missionaries.

The 2018 For The Strength of Youth Camp was coordinated in line with the general youth theme of the Church; "Peace in Christ". This was buttressed by the choice of the opening hymn; "Where Can I Turn For Peace", sung by the FSY 2018 camp coordinating couple Mrs and Mrs Uket Mbang. They taught the youth the importance of missionary work and prayer. They also addressed many concerns of the youth about missionary service.

The program which commenced on the 13^th of August, featured youth from 9 stakes (or dioceses) across Ibadan, Lagos, Ile-Ife, Abeokuta, Ondo and Akure. The youths also had opportunity to associate with one another, share talents and ideas. 

Umahi Goodness said "I learned about the divinity of missionary work and how missionary work is a commandment given to us." She added " I learned that we should pray with real intent of heart and prayer is a thing of the heart."

Ajibola Damilola, expressed her feelings; "I have never knelt down with a group of youth praying for someone else. We did that in the camp and I felt how important praying for others is. I will take that home."

The youths also participated in gospel study. A participant called Esther Ajayi said, "The gospel study helped me feel peace. This peace helps me make righteous decision during the day."

Lagos Coordinating Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds the next youth camping in 2022.
