    Ikot Akpan gets clean water and latrine

    Local Government Area Chairman lauds gesture

    On August 18, 2018, Ikot Akpan community located in Ikot Abasi local government area, gathered in celebration mode as important dignitaries and stakeholders came together for the inauguration of  a newly constructed water and sanitation project. The project was funded by a partnership of LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Mr Ikpe Nkanang - philanthropist and organizer of IKADU Lagos Branch.

      The people of Ikot Akpan have been living without potable water and proper sanitation methods or a good access road. Elizabeth Muris, women leader, and other community members expressed their excitement that the provision of lclean water and sanitation station will reduce some of lifes challenges they face. 

      Gordon Innange, Vice Chairman of the Ikot-Abasi Local Government, said; “For everything in life we need a good source of water. Good water is required for a healthy life."

      Innange continued “The relevance of this project to the community is rated extremely high. We cannot overemphasize how much this project was needed. Everyone in this community will benefit with what has been done here."

      Tony Ekong, a youth leader remarked, “The people living in this community have faced a challenge finding clean water for drinking. Proper sanitation facilities have also given them challenges. Because of the donation of this project, we now have a hygienic environment and a good source of clean water for the market women”. 

      The project, located in close proximity of Ikot Akpan market, aims to improve the lifestyle, hygiene, water supply and sanitation awareness of market women, and by extension their families.

        

      According to Mr. Chidi Ibeakwuzie, local coordinator for LDS Charities, a diligent and comprehensive measure had been taken to ensure that the projects are of high standards in terms of quality and durability. He said, “This is not just water, but it is clean water. It is safe to drink. The most current technology is used to make it a source of the best water. Years from now this water source will still be used by people of this community."

      In his closing remarks, Mr. Ikpe Nkanang said; “This water project and the toilet facilities are borne out of the love for men, women and children of this community. We were moved to find a way to improve life for those living in this difficult situation. We are sure there will be an improvement in living conditions here."

      Mr. Ikpe Nkanang is the National Director for Public Affairs for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, a philanthropist and a native of Ikot Akpan.

      The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through LDS Charities is currently involved in several humanitarian projects across Nigeria.
