The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), a government agency, recently distributed dozens of wheelchairs to the LAWMA’s physically challenged pedestrian bridge sweepers, who recieved them with delight and gratitude.

The presentation took place in Lagos at the Olusosun office of LAWMA on August 22, 2011, and was attended by LAWMA officials, Church representatives, recipients of the wheelchairs, and by a cross section of the media.
The wheelchair recipients described their elation in post-ceremony interviews with journalists from print and electronic media. They had come to the proceedings on rollers and various other make-shift mobility contraptions, and were now leaving in brand-new wheelchairs of various sizes.
Presenting the wheelchairs to the recipients, Elder Adesina Olukanni, the Church's Director of Public Affairs in West Africa, lauded the efforts of the agency in keeping Lagos State clean over the years.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya enjoined the recipients to continue to be diligent in carrying out their duties. He thanked the Church for partnering with his agency in the areas of staff empowerment. Elated, Oresanya said that the occasion of the wheelchair presentation has proven that “there is dignity in labour which brings to fore the recognition and appreciation from a religious body.”
Elder Olukanni reported that “the welfare activity of the Church has positively impacted the lives of individuals and organizations, worldwide and in Nigeria, in the areas of emergency response in times of disaster, clean water provision, neonatal resuscitation training, vision care, food production and immunization of children.” These contributions aim to develop self-reliance in individuals and strengthen families and communities. The wheelchair project, he said, is one of many designed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Church’s welfare services to humanity worldwide.
The members of the National Public Affairs Council of the Church in attendance included Mrs. Tola Hassan, Brothers Adekunle Adegbenro, Asuquo Udobong, Tunde Aderibigbe and Elder and Sister Mark Baker.
