The Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) Self-Reliance is organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to cater for the employment needs of both members and non-members.
The event, which had 57 visitors, was organized to intimate the public on the workings and benefits of the Centre. Visitors were given a tour through the facility to see the various workshops that are taught at the center, to see the computers in the work area and to see the classroom, call center, and interview rooms. They were told how our patrons are greeted, interviewed, and helped to find their individual path to self-reliance.
The workshops/classes that are taught at the center include the Planning for Success workshop, taught at noon on Fridays or as needed; the Self Employment workshop, taught at 10:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday for each last Tuesday of the month; the Career Workshop, taught at 10:30 on every other Tuesday and Wednesday of each month; and the Accelerated Job Search (AJS) class, taught every day from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. All interested parties may join these workshops and classes, regardless of religious affiliation. They are offered as a service to the community.
In addition to the Lagos Centre, the Church has established Centers in Port Harcourt, Uyo, and Benin City.
As a result of this and other experiences, many NGOs into self-reliance and skills development have become partners with the Centre. Some of them are currently serving in the Church’s business advisory committee - a committee set up to develop and cultivate contacts and relationships of influence with employers, educational, self-employment and other community resources in Lagos area.
The Lagos Self Reliance Center Manager is Charles Adebayo, and the Center Coordinating Couple is Elder and Sister Jennings.
